Project Update June 30th: Community Tree Planting in Surabaya, East Java site

Community Tree Planting Initiative in Surabaya, East Java

Hotels for Nature, in collaboration with ISFP (Indonesia Social Forestry Program) and local communities in Surabaya, East Java, continues to make remarkable progress in their community tree planting initiative. The program is designed to enhance reforestation efforts, promote environmental sustainability, and improve the livelihoods of the residents.

Building Resilience and Providing Support

A recent case highlights the program’s commitment to its tree planters. Bayu, a key participant in the tree planting activities, was diagnosed with malaria and had to be hospitalized. Thanks to the comprehensive insurance provided to every worker, Bayu was able to receive medical care without the burden of financial stress. The insurance coverage ensured that he continued to receive his salary during his recovery period. "When I was diagnosed with malaria, I was worried about how I would support my family. The insurance and continued support have been a lifesaver," says Bayu.

Positive Environmental Impact

Since the inception of the Surabaya program in early 2023, more than 820,000 mangrove trees have been planted in Surabaya, significantly contributing to the region’s reforestation. Mangroves are amazing because they act as natural barriers against coastal erosion and storm surges, protecting coastal communities. Additionally, they are excellent carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of CO2 and helping to combat climate change. These efforts are helping to restore the local ecosystem, improve biodiversity, and combat climate change.

In addition to the tree planting efforts, 14 new nurseries for seedlings have been created, ensuring a sustainable supply of young mangrove trees for future planting activities. The active involvement of the community ensures that the trees are well-maintained and have a higher survival rate.

Shinta, another tree planter, shared her thoughts on the initiative's impact: "Now, look at the mangrove trees we have planted together. The knowledge and skills I have gained have empowered me to contribute positively to our environment. It feels incredible to be part of such a transformative project."

Looking Ahead

The program is committed to expanding its efforts in Surabaya and other parts of East Java. Further plans for the second half of 2024 include increasing the number of training sessions, involving more community members, and replicating the model to other regions.
